Dear Associated Students of Western,
As many students on campus are aware, ASWOU recently ran a six-week Get Out The Vote campaign with the goal to register as many WOU students as possible before the deadline. Over the course of the campaign, ASWOU registered 1,061 students by tabling, phone banking, and knocking on over 400 doors! In addition, after the registration deadline, we gave 24 ballot measure presentations, and in the days leading up to election, we made over 2000 calls to students to remind them to turn in their ballots.
ASWOU adopted several different approaches to reach as many students as possible in our initial registration process. The majority of our efforts were focused on the Werner Center, where volunteers and ASWOU officers tabled and went around with clipboards to encourage students to register. They also spoke in many classes over the first two weeks of school in order to reach a broader range of students. The final strategy was to canvas the neighborhoods around WOU, where they knocked on over 400 doors, many of them in apartment complexes where many students live.
After the registration deadline had passed, ASWOU staff and volunteers gave 24 ballot measure presentations in order to educate students about how the various issues in the election would affect them. These presentations were aimed to inform students about both sides of each ballot measure. Oregon Student Association and United States Student Association non-partisan voter education guides were also distributed. Many of these measures were important because they directly affected the amount of money available for higher education in the general fund in Oregon.
In the final days leading up to the election, ASWOU staff and volunteers made over 2000 phone calls to the students we registered to remind them to turn in their ballots by 8 p.m. on Nov. 4.
ASWOU would like to thank all the students who voted, as well as our volunteers who made all this amazing work possible. Thank you.
Christian Rogers
ASWOU Vice President
