Letter to the Editor
As a concerned student of Western Oregon University, I seek to bring Ms. Lucas' dangerous bias to bear.
Issue date: 5/2/08 Section: Post
They [party politics] serve to Organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force-to put in the place of the delegated will of the Nation, the will of a party...
- President George Washington's Farewell Address
Teresa Lucas is a fine individual. She works very hard for Western Oregon University's PLUS Team as well as Advocates, doing her utmost to advertise the diamond-in-the-rough that we all call home-or, school. With equal or greater fervor, Ms. Lucas also advertises the Republican Party, the WOU College Republicans and the McCain campaign.
Anyone visiting Ms. Lucas' Facebook page can clearly see that she is far above political awareness-and far from the political neutrality so crucial to ASWOU.
Despite the dizzying collection of Republican propaganda to which Ms. Lucas belongs, no group shocked or scared me more than "Remember kids Obama = Osama."
Her obviously unbalanced political agenda is frightful enough to question the integrity of even the most promising candidate. But the willingness to slander and defame another human being purely for the sake of that person's political ideology is no better than sexism, racism or religious bigotry. It is the unjustified hatred of another human being bred in ignorance and mob-mentality, nursed with a desire for personal advancement and the advancement of the phantom We.
Teresa Lucas has identified herself as an individual more concerned with a conservative agenda than with the protection and enrichment of students-the platform for which ASWOU exists. Ms. Lucas has openly spoken against the Oregon Student Association (OSA) and its supposedly liberal bias. Recently, the OSA passed bills against expensive book-binding and in favor of student free speech and yet Lucas seeks to abolish Western's chapter of this valuable and hard-working national organization.
In her campaign statement, Lucas claims that she has developed a "very positive working relationship" with Western's Administrators, claiming that they are "extremely dedicated to working for the students." In the past year, the administration has branded itself as an incorrigibly conservative, budget-focused group with tunnel-vision that a racehorse would envy. They are far from interested in the rights and liberties of students.
As a concerned student of Western Oregon University, I seek to bring Ms. Lucas' dangerous bias to bear. I have no ill-will toward Teresa Lucas, nor do I wish her any bad fortune. To the student voters of Western Oregon University I give this warning: be aware of wolves in sheep's clothing. It is far too easy for one person to infiltrate a healthy, active government and poison it to serve the extremist phantom We. Know your beliefs and fight like hell to protect them. As students-as humans-you deserve at least that.•

Mr. Christopher, I am unsure, so I will not presume nor assume anything, if you are aware of the fallacy of your argument. You fail to realize that the same thing you are warning the crowd of, character attacks, is the same thing you are doing to Ms. (Continued…)
