If you're like me and crave having a soundtrack to your newly acquired beautiful spring days then look no further than, We Shot the Moon. For anyone who is still drying their eyes after hearing about the breakup of the California-based band Waking Ashland please, cry no more. The man who fronted the piano centered Waking Ashland, Jonathan Jones, can now be heard navigating his new band We Shot the Moon through similar, yet more personal waters.
After his former band parted ways, Jones felt isolated and that perhaps his musical career had peaked. That is, until his friends in the band Sherwood stepped up and encouraged Jones to keep writing and that they would do all they could to help.
Months later, Jones had what would be the earliest stages to his new project We Shot the Moon. The band's debut EP, The Polar Bear and Cougar, is slightly reminiscent of Waking Ashland but with more upbeat hooks and a less serious overall tone.
While the theatrics are toned down, there is no mistaking Jones' love for the keys as the piano is still present in every song. Highlights of the EP include the songs "Welcome Home" and the first single "Sway Your Head." While "Sway" is a bit generic with lyrics like "You gotta pull yourself back together, give it one more shot, it's now or never," the song is still very catchy and it becomes obvious as to why it is a single.
"Welcome Home" is an inspiring little tune giving basic encouragement to those who return home after a long absence and feel they have taken a step back in life. Jones gives great insight here to those who might identify with the situation, "So I have to believe that this is gonna be my year, I'll stand up straight, look alive and be on standby."
The band's live show is just as interesting with Jones manning the mic and piano. Although they recently wrapped up a tour with Sherwood, The Higher and Houston Calls, there is no doubt that We Shot the Moon will be headlining their own tours in the near future.
This band is for fans of Waking Ashland, The Rocket Summer or Sara Bareilles. The lyrics are very uplifting and hopeful as well. The Polar Bear and Cougar will provide you with great listen for the upcoming sunny days.•
