It is fitting to start off the new 2007-2008 school year with an art exhibition premiering Western's own professors, whose major goal is bringing visual literacy and acuity into the focus in visual art. The Dan & Gail Cannon Gallery opened its doors to a lively, appreciative crowd Wednesday, Sept.26. The new gallery director, Paula Booth, started hanging the show last Sunday. Paula and her gallery assistants were elated to observe the turnout of people who came. The opening reception of the Biennial ended at 6 p.m. that evening. Most of the faculty showcasing their yearly work in the Biennial come from a diverse array of fields: graphic design, sculpture, visual media, painting, printmaking and ceramics.

The Dan & Gail Gallery is located in Campbell Hall, one of the oldest education service buildings in the state. The gallery was re-titled last spring to commemorate the generous donation by retired art professor Dr. Dan Cannon and late wife Gail Cannon in support of the Visual Arts. The Art Faculty Biennial will be displayed through Oct. 26.

Students can expect to see an exhibition almost every term. The Dan & Gail Cannon Gallery exhibits a showcase of faculty, alumni, professional artists and international artists every five weeks. Students will always have an extensive opportunity to experience the arts in action.

If you're thinking of joining a club, the Committee for the Exhibition of Visual Arts (CEVA) is great extra curricular activity to be involved in. CEVA's main mission is art education. Like any other club, CEVA needs ambitious individuals who have a sincere appreciation for the arts and want to learn more about them.•
