Western Oregon University's football program, headed by third year coach Arne Ferguson, has matched their impressive record from last year with four wins on the board and only one loss. Eerily similar to last season, it was in week six of last year that the Wolves headed to Ellensburg, Wash. to take on the tough Central Washington Wildcats and their star quarterback Mike Reilly. Reilly blew up Western's defensive backs last year with four touchdowns, three of which were snagged by the dangerous wide out Johnny Spevak.

The Wildcats are No. 4 in the first ever NCAA Division II regional poll-making Saturday's game the most important game the Wolves will play all season. Since Western's football team is an independent, they are unlikely to be invited to the Division II football playoffs, which begin Nov. 17. If the Wolves can make a statement here, and defeat a very good team, their stock goes way up. Both teams go at each other with matching 4-1 records and both programs are led by well-coached passers supported by passionate, intelligent coaches. The Wildcats' head coach, John Zamberlin, has planned perfectly for ways to contain the Wolves' potent ground game in the past and will surely look to limit an explosive Western tailback Ben Kuenzi.

Western and Central Washington are old foes, having played each other for more than seven decades, and will continue to battle in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference starting-up again next year. The Wildcats only loss (28-35) came against a North Dakota team that is No. 2 in the regional poll. Western's only loss (17-24) came at the hands of No. 24 ranked Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) on Sept. 22.

The Wolves' previous games, plus the win against Humboldt State (See Page…), put the Wolves at 4-1 and in a position to pull a quick one on Central Washington. Be there! Seriously, if you go to any one game this season make it this one. Make it count and support the "Red Sea" by wearing your red too.

The game is Oct. 13, this Saturday at 2:00P.M. And, if you absolutely cannot make it, listen in on 1220 AM or log on to www.wouwolves.com
