The men's and women's track squads kicked off the start of the outdoor season at the Linfield Icebreaker, held Saturday, March 3, in McMinnville.
A number of athletes posted solid early season marks in fair, dry weather.
Throwers Chevonna Lynch and Sabrina Freed were the only two event winners of the day for Western. Lynch won the shot put with a toss of 41-5.75, while Freed had top marks in the hammer throw with a mark of 162-4. That toss was a personal record for Freed and ranks her fifth all-time at Western. Freed also took third in the shot put with a mark of 38-5. Freshman Alee Rowley debuted at 10,000 meters, which was held on Friday night. She took second place in 39 minutes, 0.9 seconds (hand-timed), a time that ranks fourth on Western's all time listing at that distance.
Fellow frosh distance runner Shirlon Moncrief tried her hand at the 3,000-meter steeplechase and took fourth place in 12:34.08.
Other second-place finishes for the women included senior Stephanie Upshaw in the 800 meters (2:22.43) and senior Natalie Nash in the 400 hurdles (1:08.79). Nash also took sixth place in the 100 meters in 13.47.
Third place finishers included sophomore Jacque Postlewait in the 100-meter hurdles (15.63), freshman Lacey Tibbets in the high jump (4-11), sophomore Sarajane Rosenberg in the long jump (16-3) and triple jump (33-6) and senior Chelsea Glavin in the javelin (129-11).
On the men's side, freshman Lloyd Massey was in fine form in the hurdles races. He won both the 110-meter high hurdles (15.82) and 400 hurdles (55.49).
The men's team, much like the women's, showed its strength in the distances. Freshmen Mike Schmidt (15:38.37) and Braxton Jackson (33:25.7h) added third-place finishes in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, respectively, as did Jeff Long in the 800 meters (1:58.08).
Blake Estep ran the 400 meters in 50.91 to take fourth.
The Wolves were scheduled to participate in Mount Hood Invitational in Gresham on Saturday, March 9, but that meet has been canceled due to needed repairson the track. The next outdoor meet will be the Oregon Preview, held March 16-17 in Eugene.
Two athletes qualified to represent Western in the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships on March 9-10 in Boston, Mass., Senior Taryn Plypick will compete in the women's high jump, while sophomore Anthony Marin will participate in the men's weight throw.
