To those of you who read this column: I apologize if this edition of "Out in Left Field" is a bit too personal or self-indulgent. My hope is that all of you may be able to apply it to the athletes in your lives, whomever they are and whatever their situation. Dear Rachel, I know this season didn't end quite the way you wanted it to, nor did it have the results you hoped, but do not be disheartened. It may take some time to do so, but I hope one day you will look back at your first year of college athletics as a success, not a failure. Adjusting to college and being away from home for the first time are no small feats. Adding in collegiate soccer makes that process still more difficult. And, as you found, the college game is definitely more difficult; a step up. The girls are faster, stronger and more skilled than those you played in high school. With that being said, what you have done this season is remarkable. Your graces under pressure, perseverance and courage have inspired me more than you know. You played your first match this season just nine-and-one-half months after tearing your ACL; it still hasn't even been a year. And this season, not only did you play, but you played well. You were an impact player each minute you were out on the field. I don't think you fully realize what an amazing accomplishment that was. When you were injured, my heart didn't just hurt for you-my soul ached. I marvel at the progress you've made this past year. To be where you are now compared to where you were last winter is incredible. After you had surgery, you could barely lift your leg off the bed, remember? Maybe you don't remember; after all, the doctors gave you good drugs. But I do. I was with you that entire first week, your every waking moment and even when you were asleep. That was a long week for me too, taking care of you, but I'd do it again in a second. I have witnessed up close your evolution from that first day in the hospital to where you are today: mobile, healthy, and playing the game you love. Keep all that in mind when you think about this season; in sports, we can always use a sense of perspective. However, if you still aren't satisfied with this year, then good. May it be your impetus to improve yourself as a player. You have so much more room to grow, to reach your potential. As good as you are now, I think you're just scratching the surface of how great you can be. Congratulations on your first collegiate season. I have delighted in being able to watch you play. Set your goals high, work hard to achieve them and don't ever settle. I love you and I'm always on your sideline. Love always, Amanda Editor's Note: Rachel Miles is a freshman forward on the Linfield women's soccer team. She ended the 2006 season with five goals and one assist.
