New Student Week helps to prepare students for year

Being thrown into a new environment can be exciting, nerve-racking and, for some, even a little bit scary. That is why the PLUS Team (Peer Leaders Understanding Students) and Student Leadership & Activities sponsors New Student Week, where incoming freshmen can get accustomed to campus before school actually begins.
The 25-person team led, directed and assisted in just under 200 activities. Everything from speed dating and a dance to bingo and a comedian were offered last week to help ease the transition of incoming freshmen.
A variety of different speakers came to Western, to give advice and promote healthy, fun lifestyles. "Will Keim was my favorite speaker of the week," said PLUS Team coordinator Janet Costello. "His speech was really motivational."
"New Student Week is a really good way for new freshmen to get to know each other and warm up to the campus," said Sarah Brogan, the other PLUS Team coordinator.
PLUS Team was busy all week making sure students had an exceptional time, with activities that started at 8 a.m. and didn't end until midnight.
The week ended with a Variety Show, which showcased unique talents possessed by the freshmen, and ended with an extraordinary dance routine put on by the entire PLUS Team.
"We were here until 3:45 a.m. after the Variety Show, cleaning up and riding the adrenaline," PLUS Team member Rick Misar said. "Being jacked up from candy and pop helped a little, too."
New Student Week was a great tool for making new friends, as well as getting in touch with old friends from high school. Said freshman Robert Glover, "I think I'm very well prepared for the school year." Hopefully, Western's newest students are now comfortably settled in and ready to "ride the adrenaline" all through the 2006-2007 year.
