After weeks of campaigning and four days of student voting, the election results came in Thursday, May 11, for next year's Associated Students of Western Oregon University (ASWOU) cabinet.

The 2006-07 academic year is to be headed up by students Patrick Waugh and Trevor Setvin in the roles of ASWOU President and Vice President, respectively.

Waugh, who currently resides as ASWOU Director of Business and Finance, received 245 votes, 20 votes more than competitor Carl Fisher and 164 votes more than candidate Samuel Hobbs.

Setvin, who credits his interest in leadership from his experience in PLUS Team, beat out two candidates as well for the position of Vice President-he received 234 votes while Mariko Chambers, current ASWOU Chief of Staff, received 202 and Rick Misar took in 128.

Both Setvin and Waugh said they are excited for the 2006-07 year and have changes they would like to see made in student government.

"The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is working well with other groups on campus," Waugh said.

Setvin resonated with Waugh, citing that he wants to see student groups such as the Resident Hall Association (RHA) and Peer Mentors working with ASWOU. "It's almost like we work against each other sometimes," he said. "We all need to work together."

Setvin also said he is focused on changing ASWOU's communication with students. "They [students] don't know how to access ASWOU and its resources."

In addition, Setvin said he hopes to see more diversity and a better relationship with the faculty and administration next year.

While Waugh and Setvin ran on separate campaigns, the two said it will not hinder their cooperation as ASWOU leaders next year.

Waugh, who campaigned separately from Setvin, ran with candidates Mariko Chambers, Rachel Johnson, Michael Washburn and Nicole Seery in the "We Live This" campaign. Running in a group, Waugh said he felt was the way to go. However, "I fully knew that it was possible that not everybody would get in," he said.

"As far as I'm concerned, as of Thursday night, we [the elected members] are ASWOU."

Despite not running together in the same group, Waugh said that he believes he and Setvin will work well together. "He's a great guy," Waugh said, "and I like him."

Setvin felt the same about Waugh. "We do have some differences, but I do think he [Waugh] is going to do a great job."

Waugh and Setvin met earlier this week, they said, to go over goals and possible future changes. "We have a lot of the same views," Setvin said.

"Trevor and I got on the same page," Waugh said, citing the "whole thing is about unity."

Joining Waugh and Setvin in the 2006-07 cabinet will be Rachel Johnson as ASWOU Judicial Administrator, Jonathan Valder as Senate President and Nicole Seery as Student Activities Board (SAB) Director.
