Along with the foliage of leaves and the showers of rain on Western's campus, autumn marks the time of student-government elections.

The Associated Students of Western Oregon University (ASWOU) have 19 openings to fill throughout the Judicial Board, the Incidental Fee Committee (IFC), the Advisory Board and the Senate.

The positions available are ones that were not filled during last academic year's spring elections, according to Judicial Administrator Andrew Fowler.

Application packets, which can be picked up in front of the ASWOU office on the main floor of the Werner University Center, were dispersed Monday, Fowler said, and must be turned in by Tuesday, Nov. 15 by 5 p.m. to be considered.

There are no prerequisites for any of the positions, Fowler said; students simply need to fill out the application, answering all questions, emphasizing what he or she would bring to student government.

Campaign week will take place from Nov. 17 through Nov. 23. The time, Fowler said, allows students running for positions to hang signs about campus and talk to students about issues.

Two forums will also take place as a means for candidates to let their voices be heard. One will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 and the other will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 22; both are located in the Oregon Room of the Werner University Center.

Following campaign week, voting will take place from Nov. 28 through Dec. 1.

Elections this fall are occurring later than they have in the past in order to weed out the people who weren't sure about their positions, Fowler said.

Instead of running the elections in October when there was a dismal three openings, ASWOU waited until November to see who would drop out from current positions.

Fowler encourages all students with an interest in student government to apply. It is a good way to "get involved in school," he said, you "not only meet new people but also develop as a well-rounded person."

Fowler is optimistic about filling this fall's 19 positions.

"We've had up to 32 positions available before," he said. "If we don't fill them, we will definitely come close."
