Grocery stores are sure to be littered in a matter of weeks as citizens flood to make their Thanksgiving purchases.
This holiday, one Western campus organization is doing the shopping for the families that cannot afford to.
Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) is currently seeking donations in order to make Thanksgiving for 25 local families one to remember.
"We're very excited about it," said Viri Pozos, MEChA co-chair. The group, which focuses on promoting higher education with an emphasis on the Chicano/Latino culture, is accepting donations up until Nov. 18 for its cause.
MEChA members went door-to-door through the Monmouth/Independence community this past weekend, passing out fliers about their cause and trying to gain donations. They are accepting all types of donations, Pozos said, from pop cans, to canned vegetables and money.
Thus far, the donations have been good, according to Pozos, including some from several community businesses, she said.
MEChA members plan to take money they receive to purchase turkeys, vegetables, pies and all the traditional Thanksgiving staples. They'll deliver the holiday baskets to the families on Nov. 22, Pozos said-two days before the big day.
The donation drive is important, Pozos said, "because it goes back here to these families who are in need of it."
She said it's about, "making the difference in somebody's holiday."
Donations can be dropped off at the MEChA office in APS 501.
