On Sunday, Feb. 1, the Chinese Student and Scholar club hosted a traditional Chinese New Year celebration. Sights and sounds of the event included music and dancing performed by international students, as well as traditional Chinese food.
A wide array of students, staff and community members trickled into the ITC auditorium on Super Bowl Sunday, keen not on watching football, but on discussing issues of immigration and globalization with author and photojournalist David Bacon. With 20 years of experience as a labor organizer and immigrant rights activist, Bacon has continually promoted equality for the entire working class of America.
Last Wednesday morning at 11:16 a.m., Campus Public Safety (CPS) and Monmouth Police identified, detained and arrested Western student Jeffrey Maxwell in the downstairs student area of Werner University Center (WUC) for violation of ORS 166.370, Possession of a Firearm in a Public Building.
In June 2007, a law was passed increasing the number of indoor workplaces required to be smoke-free. It also prohibited smoking within 10 feet of public entrances and air vents. The law was put into effect Jan. 1, 2009, and Western is working to make sure that the campus complies with the new restrictions.
The Oregon Academy of Science (OAS) is holding its 68th annual meeting at Western on Feb. 28, 2009, with the goal of promoting scientific research and education throughout the state. Western students Alyssa Pratt and Matt Buche, coordinators for the OAS event, have worked to make this year's meeting accessible to everyone.
As part of the Western Oregon Social Science Symposium Series, Dr. Eliot Dickinson, professor of political science, addressed the Monday afternoon faculty, staff and students gathered in HSS 237 with promise to share a bit about Austria and his personal experiences, as well as the country's history, more contemporary politics and some of the juicy scandals that occurred over the last few years.
