The Powderpuff girls' football game at Western is a grand old tradition. The off-campus girls of Western play the on-campus girls. It started in 1979, as a part of the Homecoming ceremony. In the 1970s, collegiate intramural sports were more oriented toward males.
Rugby has established itself as a fixture at Western Oregon University through the continued success of the female and male squads, philanthropic efforts and national recognition. However, few know that over six years ago a group of students took it upon themselves to start a team in a sport many of them had never played before and formed Western Oregon University's Men's Rugby Club in 2001.
On Saturday Oct. 13 the OTHER rivalry in Texas takes to the field. Last week's Red River Shootout was entertaining, Oklahoma handing Texas their first 0-2 conference start since 1956 is something to take notice of. This week presents a very intriguing match-up between two very different teams.
When most people think about going for a run, they consider between three and ten miles good. Junior cross country team member Nic Karr is different. Karr is captain of the Western Oregon Cross Country team and his idea of a run is very different. Newcomers to the team run between 40 and 60 miles a week.
The basketball team will be holding its annual Midnight Madness celebration at 11:30 p.m., Oct. 14. Midnight Madness signifies the start of Western Oregon's basketball practices and officially introduces the team to the student body. It will be the first time Western gets to see the team, for the upcoming basketball season, together.
The Western Oregon Wolves, now midway through their football season, defeated the Humboldt State University (HSU) Lumberjacks 27-3 on Saturday Oct. 6, to bring their record to 4-1. The Wolves were led by the hard running sophomore tailback, Ben Kuenzi, who is averaging nearly 111 yards on the ground per game.

Intramurals are a great way to meet new friends and engage in (somewhat) friendly competition, not to mention stay in shape. Intramural flag football season is underway, come out and enjoy the competition! Although the leagues are full already with 18 teams in three different divisions, teams can add players to their roster up until Oct.
Western Oregon University's football program, headed by third year coach Arne Ferguson, has matched their impressive record from last year with four wins on the board and only one loss. Eerily similar to last season, it was in week six of last year that the Wolves headed to Ellensburg, Wash.
