Out-of-state tuition is three times higher than in-state tuition. For the children of illegal immigrants, who have a difficult time receiving in-state tuition, the idea of paying out-of-state tuition creates an insurmountable burden to receiving a quality education.

A group of activists have been calling out the Eugene Police Department recently for what it says is grossly out-of-hand treatment of the city's homeless community. Members of the Lane County Students for a Democratic Society say they have been receiving accounts of police oppression from homeless people and social service workers who work with the homeless on a daily basis.

One of the bigger steps in fielding a competitive cheerleading team was taken last Thursday with the introduction of the program's first head coach. Felecia Mulkey was named to lead the team after spending the last 11 seasons at Kennesaw State in Georgia. She helped win two National Cheerleading Association Division II national championships with Kennesaw State and hopes to bring a similar level of success to Oregon.

Similar to other girls, Egland's first impulse was to hold onto the dress and its memories, some memories she realized other girls are being deprived of because of financial reasons.

President Bush signed a new GI Bill on Monday aimed at providing the full cost for college or job training for those who served after Sept. 11, 2001. The GI Bill will extend to activated reservists and National Guardsmen with benefits paid proportionally to the number of months in active duty.



Jacob Meeks, the president of the Student Veteran Association (SVA) at PSU, an organization recently responsible for helping to raise money for scholarships for veterans and a summer retreat for new association leadership, has spoken with both Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) about the GI Bill.

On June 18, extravagant donor and Oregon State alumnus Martin N. Kelley died of cancer at the age of 80 in his Lake Oswego home.

Scattered on bulletin boards, tables and phone booths across campus are various fliers and postings for employment, one of which is for workforstudents.com, a flier advertising $12 to $16 per base/appointment. The flier promises students real work experience and the possibility for a highly sought after internship.



Workforstudents.com is a Web site for Vector Marketing, the selling arm for CUTCO Cutlery, aimed at recruiting potential salespeople. The Web site has some brief informational pages giving background on the company, mostly boasting its successes.

Olivia Vivian was stunned.

"I don't know how many eye lashes I have wished upon for this result," Vivian wrote in her blog. "The feeling I have right now is indescribable! The feeling of living your dream, achieving your goal - although it's not complete yet!"

Oregon State gymnastics recruit Vivian is one of six gymnasts nominated to form Australia's women's artistic gymnastics team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
